Mammography and Check Your Own Breasts Not replaceable, Breast cancer is still a frightening specter for most women. There are several ways of early detection of breast cancer, one of which is to check your own breasts, and mammography. During this time, early detection by both methods are often not applied, but this way is very powerful to detect the risk of developing cancer and increase a person’s level of recovery of patients if cancer cells are found since the early stages.
Recent research suggests mammography and breast self-check out highly effective in detecting breast cancer, including younger age in women. “Annual screening with mammography and methods of breast self-checks are critical components for the detection of breast cancer,” said Dr. Jamie Caughran, who will present the effectiveness of such screening on Breast Cancer Symposium 2011 in San Francisco on Thursday next.
Please note, in 2009 the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, had issued a statement which is enough to make fuss. They recommended that women should wait until age 50 before performing mammograms on a regular basis. Even they advise that a mammogram should be done at least twice a year (which should be once a year).
“This is very controversial both for patients and physicians,” said Caughran, who also is medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Center, Lacks Cancer Center in Grand Rapids, Mich. According Caughran breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women, after skin cancer, and is the second leading cause of death from cancer in women.
The study involved nearly 6,000 women volunteers in Michigan, where the average age of 59 years, and has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Research shows that two-thirds of the tumors found by mammography, 30 percent by palpation and breast self-check of 90 percent or even 10 percent with a doctor’s examination. As for women under the age of 50 years, 48 percent of cancers detected by mammography and 46 percent by palpation (by feeling).
