MANILA, Philippines -- Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup is already taken. This, the 25-year-old beauty queen revealed after placing fourth at this year’s pageant held Sept. 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In an interview on “Bandila” Sept. 13, she divulged, “Yes [I’m in a relationship],” adding “Di kasi ako showbiz, eh. I’m honest and I want the people to know about it.” Shamcey, who is a Born Again Christian, revealed that her boyfriend changed his religion for her. In a separate interview with “Umagang Kay Ganda,” Shamcey said that her boyfriend (whom she refuses to name for the sake of his privacy) used to be a Catholic. Incidentally, Shamcey earned nods for her answer during the Top 5’s Question-and-Answer. The Architecture board topnotcher said the question was unexpected but seemingly tailor-made for her. During the pageant, Miss Universe judge Vivica A. Fox’s asked her: “Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love?” Shamcey’s answer went: “If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me. And I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too.” Explaining how her answer came out naturally (she was the only one among the Top 5 who didn’t use an interpreter), the GenSan-raised beauty gave credit to her mother’s teachings. “My mom (Marcelina Supsup) is really strict and she always tells me na ‘yung magiging boyfriend ko or ‘yung asawa ko, should be a Christian first, and that our relationship should be centered [on] God. Kumbaga, walang kinalaman sa pageant or sa question ang answer. It was just what she taught me and it just came out naturally.” ‘Big mistake’ In an interview aired on “TV Patrol” Sept. 13, Shamcey recalled: “I thought I’m not gonna get in Top 10, I made a big mistake. “I did not take off my sarong sa leeg ko during the swimsuit competition. Sabi ko sa sarili [ko] that time na hindi ako matatawag sa Top 10. I said, ‘Lord, pag ako tinawag sa Top 10, it’s a miracle!’” “I’m just so happy, I just want people to be proud of me. Sabi ko, I don’t want to let them down.” For Shamcey, “I’m really happy to be part of Top 5. Among 89 candidates and you end up in Top 5, that’s a great achievement already. And I already said that in a competition, there’s a winner, someone will lose, someone will win, di ba? And we should, like, accept things for what they are. “I think that what makes a winner, is not just winning the crown but being able to accept that hindi ikaw yung nanalo. Dapat maging grateful ka on whatever is given to you.” Many proclaim support that Shamcey should have won the crown or should have at least placed higher in the competition. Grateful as she is, Shamcey also came to defend Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola. “Well, una masaya dahil they consider me as the Miss Universe pero para sa’kin, we’re not the judges there, and I accept the fact na I’m third runner-up and I’m already happy. I think we should be happy also for Miss Angola that she won, and I think that she also deserves the crown.” Shamcey is expected to return to the country Sept. 18 after a brief vacation in Los Angeles, California.
